THE TALE OF JOKO TOLE

In the kingdom of Majapahit, there was a young warrior from Madura named Joko Tole. He was famous for his supernatural power. He could erect the heavy palace gate easily. Whenever there where difficulties, The King summoned Joko Tole. Joko Tole was really an agile and brave warrior. The kingdom loved him very much. He often gave him presents. But there were some warriors who were jealous of his success. They tried to slander him. They said, Joko Tole was not really loyal to the King. The King heard about the slander. But the king did not believe it. He  wanted to test  Joko Tole’s loyalty. I want Joko Tole to marry my blind daughter. If be refuses, then be is not loyal to me. But if obeys, then the slander is wrong,´ said the King to himself. The King summoned Joko Tole. Joko Tole, will you marry my daughter Dewi Ratnadi?´ asked the King. I will, Your Majesty,´ answered Joko Tole firmly. Will you not be sorry because my daughter is blind?´ Why should I be sorry? I said I will, Your Majesty. And that is what I will do,´ said Joko Tole. The King nodded and smiled happily. The King summoned Joko Tole. Joko Tole, will you marry my daughter Dewi Ratnadi?´ asked the King. I will, Your Majesty,´ answered Joko Tole firmly. Will you not be sorry because my daughter is blind?´ Why should I be sorry? I said I will, Your Majesty. And that is what I will do,´ said Joko Tole. The King nodded and smiled happily.
A few days later, the Kings and Queen celebrate their daughter’s wedding. Some people whispered, Look, a handsome young man marries a blind girl. How sad!´ Another said,´Joko Tole is very loyal to the King. Why is be forced to marry the blind Princess?´ After the ceremony, the new couple asked for the Kings permission to go to Sumenep in the Island of Madura. The King blessed them and gave his permission. The servants prepared a sedan chair for Dewi Ratnadi, but Joko Tole refused it. We thank you very much, but we do not need a sedan chair.
I will lead and protect my wife. She will be alright,´ he said. Joko Tole and Dewi Ratnadi left Majapahit. Dewi Ratnadi brought her stick. Joko Tole was very gentle and kind to her.  joko Tole holding his wife's hand fondly. He procts the Goddess Ratnadi if they have to cross the road. To go to tht Island of Madura, they must go by boat. Travel across the Madura Strait shortly. They arrived safely on the Island. Goddess Ratnadi want to bathe. But there was no water in it. The land is very dry. Joko Tole hen take a stick to his wife. He stuck the stick in the ground.
A few moments later, he pulled the stick. And«out clear water and fresh out of the hole. The water was sprinkled on the face of Goddess Ratnadi« suddenly there was a miracle. Goddess Ratnadi screamed, Kanda Joko Tole! I can see! I can see! It's a miracle!´ Are you sure,darling?´ Ask Joko Tole. Look at my eyes! I really can see now, he said happily.
The place where the water spurted out is now called Soca. And it became afresh water source. Soca means eye. It is called so because that was the place where Dewi Ratnadi's eyes began to see. since then, Dewi Ratnadi could walk by herself, without her stick and without her husband's help. They went on to Sumenep. On the way Dewi Ratnadi took a bath in the river. Her underwear was drifted by the water. Joko Tole told the water it give it back. The water obeyed. It turned and flowed upstream, carrying the underwear. Joko Tole picked it up quickly. It was amazing!
The place became a fresh water source. It is located in the north east of Sampang and is called Omben. Omben or Amben is an original Madura's word. It means a woman's underwear.´Finally« they arrived in Sumenep. They were welcomed by Joko Tole's parents and people of Sumenep. People were happy because Joko Tole married a beautiful girl. And they became happier when they knew that the girl was the King of Majapahit's daughter. At time Sumenep was ruled by Prince Saccadiningrat. He was a close relative to Joko Tole. Then Joko Tole was inaugurated as the new Regent of Sumenep. Under his leadership, the people lived prosperoisly.
